I was only at the spectacular new Fiesta Americana Grand Aqua Hotel in Cancun for a few minutes when I saw how unique is. I had just walked down to the pool area where I saw plush white double beds with curtains surrounding part of the pool. And when I sank down into one of these four-poster beds and drew the curtains, I saw that I could have total privacy with someone even if there were people right outside. (Unless some sneaky devil opened up the curtains and peeked in!)
If I instead chose to keep the curtains open so I could look out from this little cocoon, it was still a magnificent sight: eight overlapping infinity swimming pools overflowing gracefully into each other. (This hotel is flooded with water designs indoors as well as outdoors, no surprise in a place called Aqua.)
All around the "beds" and pools are comfortable (and plentiful) white padded chairs and canopies to protect you from the hot Mexican sun, whirlpools, Tiki huts set up for outdoor massages for couples, and of course, there's also the spectacular view of the peacock-blue Caribbean and white powdery sand that has made Cancun a top romantic destination for years .
Some people put Cancun down because it has so many hotels huddled into a small strip. And, yes, there are 95 hotels, but like this new Grand Aqua Hotel, many are a little piece of paradise. So who cares if there are other places nearby? In fact, the view of these hotels--many with the stair-step Mayan architecture of the Aqua--is one of the many striking things to see from the glass halls of this hotel.
From here, you can also see one of the biggest shopping malls in Cancun which is directly across the street, and Aqua is also easily accessible to other attractions as well. Not to be missed are two famous eco-amusement-parks, Garrafon in Isla Mujares, and Xcaret Water Park.
Try the "Sea Trek" once you get to Garrafon - it's called helmet diving elsewhere --which is like scuba diving for dummies. You go down about 10 feet underwater with only a helmet and no backpack. And women love it because you can actually dive under the water and never get your hair wet!
