TWO NEW ENGLAND INNS

Less than an hour from the places in Vermont you've heard of --- Burlington, Stowe, and Sugarbush - is the Inn at Essex, which you may not have heard of, but you ought to get to know.

For one thing, this hotel is the second campus of the New England Culinary Institute, guaranteeing that your the meals you eat here will definitely not be typical inn-fare-especially since the chefs get credits for classroom creativity. A great place for a birthday or anniversary since you can order a cake and have anything you want on it: you on skis or a golf course, or even a copy of your dog and cat on it. How purr-fect!

Although it's called an inn, it's really a full-service small hotel that's as friendly as an inn. In addition to the 121 rooms, there's an outdoor skating rink in the winter that converts to a volleyball court in the summer; a heated outdoor pool, and right off the grounds, almost within walking distance is the Essex Outlet Mall. It's filled with brand name shops you can tear into if you can tear yourself away from this warm and beautifully decorated boutique hotel, er inn.

Deerfield Inn

The Deerfield Inn has been rebuilt and remodeled several times since it first opened in 1884, and some of what the rest of this town looked like then can be seen on the main street where the Inn is situated. This mile-long road contains 14 museum houses that remain pretty much the same as they were 300 years ago.

You'll probably only take the horse-drawn sleigh ride through this street in the winter, but you can enjoy this unusual historic inn any time of the year. It has 23 rooms, one of the best restaurants in the Berkshires, and a most congenial innkeeper (Karl Sabo).

If you want, he'll give you the room that's said to be haunted (Room 148.) Regardless of whether that's true, you really don't have a ghost of a chance of having anything but the most wonderful experience here.
